Suspected adverse case explained

An expert committee today said a suspected serious adverse event following COVID-19 vaccination did not have a direct link with the jab.   The Expert Committee on Clinical Events Assessment Following COVID-19 Immunisation made the statement after it convened an urgent meeting to assess the case.   The 63-year-old man, who received a dose of the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine on February 26, suffered from acute shortness of breath with cough and attended Queen Elizabeth Hospital by himself in the early morning of February 28. His condition worsened rapidly and he succumbed that morning.   According to the Hospital Authority, the patient was a heavy smoker, had a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity and suspected ischemic heart disease.   The preliminary autopsy information revealed that he had serious coronary heart disease which led to acute myocardial infarction and pulmonary oedema, resulting in respiratory failure before passing away.   Having cons

Double-arch steel bridge arrives

The prefabricated double-arch steel bridge for the Cross Bay Link, Tseung Kwan O, arrived in Hong Kong today and will be erected on the bridge piers later, the Civil Engineering & Development Department announced.   Upon completion, it will be the longest span and heaviest steel arch bridge in the city.   The Cross Bay Link is about 1.8km long, of which 1km is a marine viaduct composed of several sizeable steel and concrete members.   With a length of 200m and a weight of about 10,000 tonnes, the double-arch steel bridge was constructed with high-strength steel and is an integral part of the marine viaduct.   The steel bridge components are prefabricated in Nantong, near Shanghai, for delivery to Hong Kong in batches.   The delivery vessel left Nantong on February 9 and entered Junk Bay this morning.   Spanning across Junk Bay, the Cross Bay Link will connect the southeastern areas of Tseung Kwan O with the Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel and provide linkage to Tiu Keng Leng and Tseung Kwan O town centre.   The project is scheduled for completion in 2022.   It will greatly ease transport between the southeastern part of Tseung Kwan O and Kowloon. Traffic flow in the district will also be enhanced with reductions in the traffic load on Wan Po Road and Tseung Kwan O town centre.   The department supervised the arrival of the double-arch steel bridge at the Tathong Channel this morning.   It acknowledged the project team's meticulous planning and arrangement for the double-arch steel bridge's prefabrication, assembly and delivery which overcame various engineering challenges and site setting constraints.   The whole process was completed in an efficient and orderly manner, allowing the double-arch steel bridge to be delivered to Hong Kong on schedule, the department added.
