Chief Executive John Lee cheered on the Hong Kong athletes taking part in various events at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou today. Mr Lee went to games venues to watch events in which Hong Kong athletes were competing, including swimming, wushu and fencing, and extended his warmest congratulations to the athletes who won medals. Noting that having the games in their own country is of great importance to Hong Kong athletes, Mr Lee said he was pleased to have the opportunity to watch Hong Kong competitors strive for excellence and demonstrate extraordinary capabilities. The overall Comprehensive Social Security Assistance caseload dropped to 223,792 in March, down 0.3% from February, the Social Welfare Department announced today.
The total number of recipients stood at 319,191.
Low-earnings cases registered a month-to-month decrease of 2.2% to 2,422 cases, while old age cases were down 0.7% to 128,863.
Unemployment cases rose 0.4% on a monthly basis to 19,810 cases. The figure is also an increase of 57.4% compared with January 2020 when Hong Kong just started to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The average number of applications for unemployment cases in January to March was 856 per month, representing a reduction of 3.3% from the number between December 2020 and February, or a decrease of 15.1% from that between January and March.
Ill-health cases increased 0.2% to 26,289. Both permanent disability cases and single parent cases were up 0.1% to 17,502 and 24,826.
