Rural voter registration opens

The voter registration campaign for the 2021 Rural Representative Election opened today.   Those eligible should sign up by July 16, the Home Affairs Department said.   There are three types of rural representatives - Indigenous Inhabitant Representatives, Resident Representatives and Kaifong Representatives.   Indigenous Inhabitant Representatives are returned by indigenous inhabitants, their spouses or surviving spouses of an indigenous or composite indigenous village.   They reflect indigenous inhabitants’ views on village affairs, and deal with affairs relating to indigenous inhabitants’ lawful traditional rights and interests and the traditional way of life.   Resident Representatives are returned by both indigenous and non-indigenous inhabitants living in an existing village. They reflect views on village affairs on behalf of the residents.   Kaifong Representatives, returned by Cheung Chau or Peng Chau residents, reflect residents’ views on the two market towns’ affa

UK, Ireland flights to resume

The Government today said it will allow flights from the UK and Ireland to resume on May 7, subject to no significant change to the epidemic situation in Hong Kong and in relevant overseas places.   It made the decision after having considered the stabilising local epidemic situation and the relatively satisfactory vaccination rate in the UK and Ireland.   Hong Kong residents in the two places may board flights for Hong Kong and would be subject to the most stringent compulsory quarantine and testing arrangements upon arrival in the city.   They must have obtained a negative COVID-19 test result with samples taken 72 hours prior to departure as well as confirmation of a 21-night room reservation in a designated quarantine hotel.   Upon arrival in Hong Kong, they will be subject to the test-and-hold arrangement for obtaining a negative result at the airport, after which they will be subject to a 21-day compulsory quarantine in the designated quarantine hotel undergoing at least three tests during the period, and compulsory testing on the 26th day of arrival after completion of quarantine. Considering that the epidemic situation is still unstable in the existing extremely high-risk places such as India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Brazil and South Africa, the Government will continue to restrict people who have stayed in those places from boarding a flight for Hong Kong.

Where is Hong Kong?

Positioned at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta on the coast of southern China, Hong Kong’s geographical position as a gateway between the East and West has made it an attractive centre for international trade. As a reflection of this, the heart of Asia’s world city has always been the bustling and beautiful Victoria Harbour. Hong Kong’s 1,104-square-kilometer area comprises Hong Kong Island, which lies to the south of the harbour, the Kowloon Peninsula, which forms its northern shores, the New Territories to the north of Kowloon, which stretch all the way to Mainland China, and more than 200 outlying islands, including Lantau Island, where Hong Kong International Airport is located.
