Birth, death registrations go online

The Immigration Department will launch new electronic services tomorrow for eligible applicants to complete the entire process of birth or death registrations online, without having to visit a registry in person.   According to the Births & Deaths Registration (Amendment) Ordinance 2023, which will take effect tomorrow, the statutory time limit for the registration of deaths from natural causes is extended from 24 hours to 14 days.   It also removes the requirement for applicants who need to register births or deaths to attend the registries in person, so as to provide a legal basis for the introduction of electronic services for these kinds of registration.   Under the new electronic services, if either parent of a newborn baby is a Hong Kong permanent resident, the parents may submit an application for a birth registration online within 42 days after the birth of their legitimate child.   They may apply for a birth certificate at the same time and choose to receive it by

Wan Chai promenade further opens

The Wan Chai promenade connecting Tamar in Admiralty and the Convention & Exhibition Centre further opened today, adding a child-friendly green space along the Wan Chai waterfront, the Development Bureau announced.   The promenade, located on a reclaimed land of the Wan Chai Development Phase II project, is one of the 13 works projects under the $6.5 billion dedicated funding for harbourfront enhancement.   The promenade on the waterfront, with a length of about 560 metres and a width of about 6 metres, was opened in October 2019 and connects the harbourfront area of Central and Wan Chai.   It is part of the Victoria Harbour promenade, which has a total length of 5.5km and is by far the longest promenade in Hong Kong.   The bureau said the newly opened space of 7,800 sq m is largely a lawn for strolling and playing and that it also provides pavilions with various designs, tables, chairs and topography landscaping that allow visitors to relax and enjoy Victoria Harbour’s panoramic view.   Additionally, there is an activity area designed with a FunScape theme at the end of the promenade near Tamar Park.   Differing from the common children's playgrounds with mainly fixtures, the FunScape approach cultivates a free space for activities by way of horticulture design and undulating grass berms with colourful pipes.   A new art installation was also erected on the lawn area, the bureau pointed out.   Moreover, sustainable elements have been added to the newly opened area, including a wind-powered lighting system, solar-powered lamps along the walkway and a set of public art seats made from fallen trees caused by typhoons.   The bureau noted that three more entrances were added to the newly opened space in addition to three original entrances to enhance walkability at the harbourfront area.   Meanwhile, the Civil Engineering & Development Department is constructing a viewing deck across Lung Wo Road and the exit of the Central-Wan Chai Bypass. This would further improve the connectivity between the Wan Chai hinterland and the harbourfront.   The department is also planning a shared track for pedestrians and cyclists along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, which will be implemented from the end of this year or early next year.

124 COVID-19 cases reported

The Centre for Health Protection today said it is investigating 124 additional COVID-19 cases. More cases were detected in Kwai Chung Estate. There are also more than 70 preliminary positive cases.   Among the newly reported cases, 33 are related to Kwai Chung Estate, bringing the total number of positive and preliminary positive cases in the estate to 276.   One more positive case was found after an earlier confirmed case occurred at Glory Court, Tsuen Wan Garden, both of them live in units 5 but on two different floors. The centre has co-ordinated with related government departments and conducted an inspection today.    It was preliminarily considered that vertical transmission of virus via pipes is involved.   The centre will issue quarantine orders to residents of unit 5 on all floors of the building who resided there during the incubation period of the relevant cases and transfer them to a quarantine facility.   As it is possible that virus might be ejected from the open
