The Environmental Protection Department said it does not tolerate concrete batching plants operating without a licence and will make every effort to stop any illegal operations. The department made the statement in response to media reports yesterday of a concrete batching plant at 20 Tung Yuen Street in Yau Tong continuing to operate without holding a valid Specified Process Licence (SPL). The department has been closely monitoring the operation of two plants, both owned by China Concrete. The other plant is at 22 Tung Yuen Street in Yau Tong. Regarding the plant at 20 Tung Yuen Street, the Air Pollution Control Appeal Board dismissed an appeal lodged by China Concrete against the department’s refusal of its application for renewal of an SPL for the plant on November 22. Under the Air Pollution Control (Specified Processes) Regulations, the plant’s SPL ceased to be valid with immediate effect and the department issued a letter requesting that all works be halte
Athlete selection in 18 districts for the 8th Hong Kong Games will begin from October, the Leisure & Cultural Services Department said today.
The inter-district sports competitions of the games, scheduled for April 24 to May 29 next year, will cover athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
There will be champion, first runner-up and second runner-up prizes awarded to athletes or teams in each individual competition as well as overall champion, first runner-up, second runner-up and the District with Impressive Progress prizes for winning districts in each sports competition.
The districts accumulating the highest total scores from the eight sports competitions will be awarded the overall champion, overall first runner-up and overall second runner-up prizes of the event.
There are also prizes including the District with the Most Gold Medals, the District with the Greatest Participation, the District with the Best Progress, the District with the Best Sportsmanship and the District with the Strongest Cheering Squad.
For community participation programmes, the Star-studded Classroom - Elite Athletes' Demonstration & Exchange Programmes will be held from late September to mid-October, in which athletes and coaches will take part in demonstration and play-in sessions.
In the Sports Legacy - Exercise to Get Super Fit programme, participants can identify their potential in sports through fitness tests.
The popular Vitality Run will return in March next year.
The 18 Districts' Pledging & Cheering Team Competition and a photo contest will also be held to encourage people to keep active.
