The Centre for Health Protection today said it is investigating 3,172 additional locally acquired COVID-19 cases, of which 449 were identified through nucleic acid tests and 2,723 via rapid antigen tests.   Separately, 111 imported cases were detected.   Furthermore, seven residential care homes for the elderly and five for disabled people logged 13 cases involving their residents.   The Hospital Authority reported that 20 patients passed away in public hospitals. According to a preliminary analysis, the cause of death for nine patients was related to COVID-19, while that of the remaining 11 patients was unrelated.   It also registered eight more critical cases, bringing the number of patients in critical condition to 93.   Separately, to align with the Government’s cancellation of issuing isolation orders from tomorrow, the authority will, starting from the same day, announce at 8.30am and 1pm the information of general out-patient clinics (GOPC) quota reserved for COVID-19

Get COVID-19 jabs: SJ

The rapidly changing situation of the fifth wave of the epidemic starting from January with the highly transmissible variant spreading to community has aroused grave public concern, including the legal sector. The Judiciary will step up precautionary measures to ensure that courts will be able to continue to operate safely. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to all legal professionals to lead by example and fulfil their civic responsibilities in receiving a COVID-19 vaccination.   In light of the latest situation, the Judiciary announced that new jury proceedings and death inquests involving juries scheduled will generally be adjourned while all other court hearings will in general continue to proceed as scheduled. Court users, including members of the public observing court proceedings, are advised to share the responsibilities by adhering to the anti-epidemic measures implemented by the Judiciary and getting vaccinated. These measures not only protect oneself, but also protect the health and safety of judicial officers, relevant parties and others in courts.   To combat the epidemic, the Government has been strongly appealing to and encouraging the public to get vaccinated with a view to protecting the community. The Government provides a variety of channels to enable members of the public to receive vaccination conveniently, including extending vaccination services at Hospital COVID-19 Vaccination Stations, setting up additional community vaccination centres, arranging private doctors or clinics as well as service locations operated by private healthcare institutions for vaccination. I urge those who have not yet received vaccination to get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect themselves and others.   Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng wrote this article and posted it on her blog on February 27.

The centre has co-ordinated with related government departments and conducted an inspection today.    It was preliminarily considered that vertical transmission of virus via pipes is involved.   The centre will issue quarantine orders to residents of unit 5 on all floors of the building who resided there during the incubation period of the relevant cases and transfer them to a quarantine facility.   As it is possible that virus might be ejected from the open

Legal officer changes proposed

The Government has proposed to amend the law to allow legal officers of the Department of Justice to be appointed as a senior counsel.   At a media session after attending a Legislative Council meeting today, Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng explained the rationale behind the Government's proposal.   She said: “Why is it that my colleagues in the Department of Justice - who by their qualifications are solicitors but are actually arguing very well and very efficiently with great eloquence and efficacy in the Court of Final Appeal - are not being recognised when they are actually even better than their counterparts? That has always been something that sometimes troubles me.   “And for that reason, I have always been thinking about how we are going to overcome that problem.   “Now, what really triggers my determination to take this further forward is when one of our Deputy Directors of Public Prosecutions, Vinci Lam, took silk on May 29.   “That really showed that the form
