The Government today reminded the public that smoking an alternative smoking product (ASP) will be banned in a statutory no-smoking area starting April 30, and offenders will be issued with a $1,500 fixed penalty notice.
The reminder came as the Smoking (Public Health) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 takes effect on April 30, when people will also not be allowed to carry an activated ASP in a statutory no-smoking area.
The ordinance prohibits the import, promotion, manufacture, sale and possession for commercial purposes of alternative smoking products.
Offenders are subject to a maximum fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for six months.
The ban covers electronic smoking products, heated tobacco products, herbal cigarettes, and their accessories.
The ordinance prohibits the import of an ASP by way of parcels, cargoes or bringing in by incoming travellers. People bringing such products into the city must declare them to customs.
Starting this Saturday, inspectors from the Department of Health's Tobacco & Alcohol Control Office will conduct inspections, investigate complaints and carry out enforcement actions accordingly.

On the World Day for Safety & Health at Work, the department reminded people to refrain from using any smoking products at workplaces, and urged smokers to quit smoking as early as possible.
