With the aim of combatting the fear and misconceptions surrounding mental illness, Castle Peak Hospital’s Mind Space museum enables visitors to experience hallucinations, similar to the sensory experiences mentally ill patients encounter, by way of rooms that utilise virtual reality (VR) technology. A group of secondary students recently embarked on a journey through Mind Space after registering and receiving patient wristbands. This unique mental health experience museum provided them with a comprehensive understanding of the development of psychiatric services in Hong Kong. Displays in the museum showcase intriguing relics, including the evolution of restraints and handwritten patient records. Additionally, the students were given the opportunity to explore a mock protection room designed to provide a calming environment for patients. Secretary for Labour & Welfare Chris Sun attended the sharing session on the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China for the social welfare sector today.
Mr Sun highlighted General Secretary Xi Jinping’s emphasis on the need to improve people's well-being in the course of pursuing development.
He also briefed the participants on various welfare initiatives in Hong Kong such as the On-site Pre-school Rehabilitation Services, the promotion of gerontechnology to enhance senior citizens’ quality of life and the Strive & Rise Programme that supports the upward mobility of secondary students
He said these measures aim to ensure people's access to childcare, education, employment, medical services, elderly care, housing, and social assistance.
Director of Social Welfare Charmaine Lee also took part in the sharing session while representatives of social welfare organisations spoke on their reflections on the training workshops as part of the event.
