Feb exports value down 0.8%

The value of Hong Kong’s total exports decreased to $284.1 billion in February, down 0.8% on the same month last year, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.   The value of imports of goods fell 1.8% to $325.7 billion for the same period.   A trade deficit of $41.7 billion, or 12.8% of the value of imports, was recorded in February.   Comparing the three-month period ending February with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, the value of exports rose 5.5%, while that of imports also increased 3.3%.   The Government noted that taking the first two months of the year together to remove the volatility caused by the difference in timing of the Lunar New Year, the value of exports posted a 16.6% growth against a very low base of comparison a year ago.   Exports to the Mainland and the US rose notably, while those to the European Union fell. Bernadette Linn to visit GZ

Flower show blooms to be given out

Following the Hong Kong Flower Show’s conclusion tomorrow, some of the flowers on display will be distributed to the public on Monday morning, the Leisure & Cultural Services Department announced.   Flowers that are in good condition and suitable for replanting will be given out to citizens at 10am on Monday at Victoria Park's South Pavilion Plaza, near the Sugar Street entrance. It is estimated that about 3,000 pots will be distributed, subject to the condition of the plants.   Each person can get one pot on a first-come, first-served basis, while stocks last. They are also encouraged to bring their own bags.   The department urged people to visit the flower show before it closes at 9pm tomorrow.   A prize presentation ceremony for the show's student drawing competition was held today, with the winning entries placed on display at the showground.   Members of the public may also participate in an online voting campaign to choose their favourite from the

Children commission meeting held

Chief Secretary Chan Kwok-ki today chaired the 20th meeting of the Commission on Children, where members were briefed on the Government’s measures to foster a sporting culture among children and future work direction.   Early on, the Government had collected data on the physical fitness of Hong Kong citizens, including children aged between seven and 16, to understand their latest physical fitness conditions.   Results of the territory-wide physical fitness survey for the community provide benchmarking data for the Government to develop community-based training courses and recreational activities and plan public play spaces.   Additionally, members were briefed by government representatives on the proposed arrangements of expanding the scope of the Sexual Conviction Record Check Scheme to further strengthen the protection of children and mentally incapacitated people.   Considering the recommendations made by the Review of Sexual Offences Sub-committee under the Law Reform Comm

Chai Wan site to be sold

A Chai Wan site for development of Private Subsidised Sale Flats under a pilot scheme will be sold by public tender, the Lands Department announced today.   Chai Wan Inland Lot No. 185 is designated for non-industrial purposes except those of godown, hotel and petrol filling station.   It has a site area of about 5,213 sq m, with a minimum gross floor area of 30,016 sq m and a maximum gross floor area 41,704 sq m for private residential purposes.   The maximum gross floor area for non-industrial purposes excluding those mentioned is computed according to a special condition in the Conditions of Sale.   Both the total gross floor area and the gross floor area for non-industrial purposes shall include the gross floor area of government accommodation, namely a day care centre for the elderly and a centre for home care services for frail elderly people, to be constructed by the purchaser under the Conditions of Sale.   Not less than 700 residential units shall be develo

Civil service exams set

The Government today announced that sittings of the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) and the Basic Law & National Security Law Test (BLNST) have been tentatively scheduled for June 1.   Enrolment for the CRE and the BLNST will open tomorrow and close at 5pm on April 5. Prospective applicants for civil service posts at degree or professional level can apply.   The Civil Service Bureau said those who plan to apply for such posts in the near future are required to have valid CRE results and are advised to enrol for this round of examination.   The pool of eligible candidates for civil service jobs requiring an undergraduate degree has been expanded to students in their third year of undergraduate studies in a four-year curriculum.   This means that those eligible to sit the examination includes holders of degrees or of professional qualifications meeting the entry requirements of posts, and university students graduating in the 2023-24 or 2024-25 academic years.
