Xu Bing named cultural ambassador

Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung has appointed Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing as Ambassador for Cultural Promotion for about five years starting today.    As Ambassador for Cultural Promotion, Mr Xu will initiate a series of large-scale art projects in Hong Kong and nurture young talent to promote cultural development.   The Culture, Sports & Tourism Bureau said the appointment aims to extend the Ambassador for Cultural Promotion scheme to other fields of arts, after Chinese composer, musician and conductor Tan Dun became Hong Kong’s first Ambassador for Cultural Promotion last year.   Speaking at the appointment ceremony today, Mr Yeung said Mr Xu is widely recognised as one of the most innovative and influential Chinese contemporary artists.   The culture chief added that the Museum of Art collected one of Mr Xu's most well-known works A Book from the Sky, which contains both traditional and contemporary elements, just like Hong Kong

School granted over $1m in relief

The Government has provided Christian Zheng Sheng College with over $1 million in emergency relief from the Beat Drugs Fund to meet the school’s imminent needs and tide it over difficult times.   The Security Bureau’s Narcotics Division made the statement today in response to media enquiries about Zheng Sheng College calling for help from the Government as it is running out of financial resources essential to its teachers and students.   It said the emergency funding aims to prevent the school’s operation from being affected by the behaviours of certain wanted individuals.   It pointed out that the board members of Christian Zheng Sheng Association have been under police investigation for a while.   A number of wanted board members, including founder Lam Hay-sing and Zheng Sheng College principal Alman Chan, are still at large.   The operation of the school has all along relied on funding from Zheng Sheng Association.   Despite multiple requests from the Governm

Quality taxi driver vote to open

The Taxi Service Commendation Scheme 2023 will be open for public voting from April 1 to June 14, the Transport Department said today.   Members of the public are welcome to cast their votes online or by scanning the QR code printed on the scheme’s promotional materials for the “Quality Taxi Drivers” and “Good Driver, Good Service” awards.   The department said this year’s scheme received an enthusiastic response, with over 1,200 nominations received for the “Quality Taxi Drivers” and “Good Driver, Good Service” awards. Bernadette Linn visits SZ

Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn today visited Shenzhen to learn about the development of local districts, particularly in attracting industries, as reference for the development of the Northern Metropolis.      Ms Linn joined sharing sessions by the Development & Reform Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, and the Shenzhen governments of Luohu and Pingshan districts on the development of Sungang and Qingshuihe sub-districts in Luohu as well as Pingshan and Baguang sub-district of Dapeng New District.   The discussion topics included the planning and development process and selection of developers as well as a visit to some of the districts.      The development of Sungang sub-district in Luohu focuses on modern commercial business, while the neighbouring Qingshuihe sub-district, planned as a “Headquarters Economic Cluster of Digital Economy”, is a base for the artificial intelligence industry.   The Life & Health Technology Park and Biomedical Accelera

Tse Chin-wan joins Macau eco forum

Secretary for Environment & Ecology Tse Chin-wan today attended the 2024 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition in Macau and officiated at its opening ceremony with local officials.   This year’s exhibition was held with the theme “Reaching the Dual Carbon Goals through Green Transformation”.   The Environment & Ecology Bureau’s exhibition booth presented innovative initiatives adopted by Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government departments and Hong Kong industries, including smart technologies for environmental enforcement, environmental impact assessment, energy conservation, green transportation, waste recycling as well as food waste management technologies.   In addition to touring the exhibition and exchanging views with Hong Kong exhibitors, Mr Tse paid a courtesy call on Macau Secretary for Transport & Public Works Raimundo Arrais do Rosário and met Guangzhou Municipal Ecological Environment Bureau Director Wang Ba

Feb exports value down 0.8%

The value of Hong Kong’s total exports decreased to $284.1 billion in February, down 0.8% on the same month last year, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.   The value of imports of goods fell 1.8% to $325.7 billion for the same period.   A trade deficit of $41.7 billion, or 12.8% of the value of imports, was recorded in February.   Comparing the three-month period ending February with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, the value of exports rose 5.5%, while that of imports also increased 3.3%.   The Government noted that taking the first two months of the year together to remove the volatility caused by the difference in timing of the Lunar New Year, the value of exports posted a 16.6% growth against a very low base of comparison a year ago.   Exports to the Mainland and the US rose notably, while those to the European Union fell.
